You know those cute and easy to peel little oranges you have been gobbling up? Well, they are not just for snacking. They make for a perfect, on-the-fly smoothie ingredient which inspired me to whip up this delicious creation. Creamy, naturally sweet and rich in protein…this Orange Creamsicle smoothie is a healthy version of one of my favorite childhood treats. Yes, it is tasty and easy to whip up. It is also a immune-boosting powerhouse. Rich in vitamin C, the oranges add flavor as well as cold and flu fighting antioxidants and a boatload of fiber considering you are blending up the entire piece of fruit…sans the peel, of course. For added flavor add some zest–I remain obsessed.
This recipe calls for vanilla yogurt but they are not all created equal. For example, Stonyfield Organic Vanilla Yogurt has around 4 teaspoons of added sugar per serving! Yes, you read that correctly. GROSS. This is a gentle reminder that “organic” does not mean healthy. Read the ingredients and investigate the nutrition label! So, what do you do with this yogurt dilemma? Choose a plain variety and in the case of this recipe add a touch of vanilla bean or vanilla extract or, choose a low-sugar vanilla yogurt like Siggi’s (which is really the only one). There is only a teaspoon of added sugar which is a far cry from the 3-5 teaspoons found in other brands!
Okay–get you blender ready.
- 2 Halo Mandarin Oranges, peeled
- 1/2 banana
- 1 container vanilla Siggi's Yogurt (fat free or full-fat)
- 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
- 1 tablespoon hemp hearts
- orange zest, optional
- Puree all ingredients in a blender on high speed. Blend well to pulverize the orange membranes.
